According to the story, O2 are planning on closing their i-mode service due to a lack of takeup.Mobile phone company O2 is understood to be dumping its i-mode mobile internet service in Britain, owing to low take-up and a lack of attractive handsets.

The company, owned by Spain’s Telefónica, launched i-mode less than two years ago with its largest advertising campaign since rebranding from BT Cellnet.

Global SMS Traffic Keeps Rising

Global use of SMS text messaging is continuing to rise, according to figures released by Informa. According to World Cellular Data Metrics, more than 620 billion messages were sent worldwide in the first quarter of 2007.SMS revenues were up 23% over the same period, helping total data revenues to reach US$34.3 billion in the quarter, the highest ever. The higher increase in SMS traffic compared to revenue reflects lower SMS tariffs and the greater availability of bundled packages.

O2 Get UK iPhone Contract?

The BBC is reporting that UK operator O2 has secured a deal with Apple to be the exclusive provider of the iPhone in the UK.A spokesman for O2, which is owned by Spain's Telefonica, declined to comment on the reports.

More than 500,000 iPhones were sold in the first weekend in the US by AT&T, which has exclusive rights there.

Vodafone had previously been tipped as the likely winner of the contract.
